U.S. Labor Secretary Announces $1 Million Grant to Aid Dislocated Workers in Connecticut

WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a grant of $1 million, with an initial release of $550,167, to assist approximately 250 workers affected by the closure of the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company distribution center in North Haven, Conn.

"This $1 million grant will help the distribution center's workers get the skills training, placement services and assistance they need to secure new jobs," said Secretary Elaine L. Chao. "This investment will help these workers build solid career paths and a better future for themselves and their families."

The grant, awarded to the Connecticut Department of Labor, will provide an array of services and training opportunities. Many of those who will be served are experienced workers with limited job histories outside of Stop & Shop Supermarket Company.

Stop & Shop Supermarket Company issued a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) on Jan. 23, 2006. Closure of the distribution center is expected to occur on Dec. 31, 2006.

Training will focus on areas with the greatest number of employment openings available and other industries experiencing high growth and high demand. Services may include skills assessment, individual counseling, case management, job readiness training and occupational training. Supportive services also may include job search and relocation assistance.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information on National Emergency Grants and other Department of Labor employment and training programs, visit doleta.gov/NEG/.
